You will arrive almost in the city center, where it doesn't look much different to rest of Europe. A lot museums/pubs/restaurants/any other entertainment. There is so much shit to do that I can't even point something out Go to city outskirts of you want to know how most of Russians live. Take a look on so-called "bedroom districts" with a shit ton of apartments per minimal area. Take a commuter train to some suburb town. This way you will also see how Russians live outside of the city. It looks almost surreal. Log huts are everywhere

As other anons have pointed out, you should definitly visit Moscow, Saint-Petresburg and Kazan. If you care about older places, you shoud take a look at the Golden Ring. That's a bunch of cities with a pretty long history.If you want to get a feel for what a less developed Russia looks like and at the same have a tour of historic sights, you should visit places like Tver or Nizhniy Novgorod.And it's a must to see such cities as Penza or Stavropol to learn how bad it can be. Or if you are fearless enough, try to have a look at Chechnya or Dagestan.
